The Spring Festival is the grandest and most lively traditional festival for the Chinese people, also known as the reunion festival and celebration festival of the sons and daughters of Huaxia. During the Spring Festival, the same joyous atmosphere prevails everywhere, but different regions follow their own customs to celebrate. So today, let's talk about the New Year atmosphere in Maoming.

In traditional rituals, Maoming has many customs such as pasting spring couplets, having reunion dinners, and setting off firecrackers to usher in the New Year: Every household pastes spring couplets at the entrance, and also posts large, upside-down "" characters on windows, corridors, rooftops, symbolizing the arrival of happiness and wealth. The dinner on New Year's Eve is called the reunion dinner, with a table full of sumptuous New Year dishes, bringing the family together in a joyful atmosphere. After the reunion dinner, families watch the Spring Festival Gala together. As the New Year's bell rings, the sound of firecrackers and fireworks fills the air continuously, heralding the arrival of the new year.

In Maoming, the unique New Year customs are characterized by colorful decorations and a lively atmosphere.

In addition to traditional rituals, Maoming's traditional Spring Festival also features a unique New Year custom known as "Nianli." Nianli, as the name suggests, is carried out according to convention each year. In Maoming, Nianli is a lively traditional event with roots tracing back to ancient sacrificial activities in the Lingnan region, first documented in the Song Dynasty. Nianli typically starts from the second day of the first lunar month and continues until the end of the month, but the specific dates and celebratory methods vary in different parts of Maoming.

The traditional Nianli activities in our village include the beginning of Nianli, the main period of Nianli, and the end of Nianli, primarily centered around solemn sacrificial rituals involving devout worship, hanging lanterns, deity processions, and setting off firecrackers to express sincere reverence towards the deities. In recent years, in addition to the sacrificial rites, Nianli has evolved to incorporate a variety of cultural performances and entertainment activities such as lion dances, dragon dances, Cantonese opera, puppet shows, singing and dancing, and various forms of dramas.

As Nianli festivities primarily revolve around sacrificial activities, the most lively and essential part of the Nianli celebration is the deity procession. During the deity procession, a team parades the local deities and immortals out of the temples and carries them around to various villages. The procession team includes individuals carrying colorful flags, drum bearers, and gong players. Prior to the arrival of the deities, preparations are made for a welcoming ceremony, which involves presenting a whole cooked chicken on a plate with its head facing the direction of the deities' arrival, along with setting off firecrackers in advance. As the deities approach, people light firecrackers, play drums and gongs, each person holds burning incense for worship, bows three times towards the deities, and then places the incense in the censer.

The lively and festive scene of the Spring Festival

After worshipping the deities, the Spring Festival in Maoming reaches its climax with a highlight of the day - hosting guests for a feast, known as "Chi Nianli" or "Eating Nianli." Every household prepares a sumptuous feast with a variety of dishes, including poultry, meat, seafood, and more. Common dishes include poached chicken, roast duck, braised pork, steamed fish, pigeon, and white spoon shrimp. There is a saying among the people of Maoming that "Every Nianli makes you gain ten pounds," referring to the indulgent feasting that takes place during this time.

As the auspicious rabbit bids farewell to the old year and the loong soars into the new year, the Spring Festival in Maoming is filled with bustling joy, great fortune, countless stories of festive traditions, and an unforgettable sense of family happiness.
