In the Spring Festival of 2025, I finally managed to take time off and return to my hometown in Hunan for the Chinese New Year. After many years of working away from home, I could only hear about the festive atmosphere of my hometown through phone calls. This time, I was finally able to experience it myself, and I was filled with excitement and anticipation.
The Journey Home – The Step of Homesickness
The journey home always carries a special emotional significance. Whether by high-speed train or by car, the feeling of returning home is always urgent. As I travel from the city to the countryside, the scenery outside gradually becomes familiar—vast fields, winding roads, and those low but cozy houses, greeting my return like old friends. When I arrived home, it was already evening. The lights in the village flickered in the dark, and red lanterns were hung at the door, casting a warm glow on my parents' faces. My mother hurried to greet me, took my luggage, while my father patted me on the shoulder. Although he didn’t say much, his evident joy made me feel the deep affection.
The Taste of the Year – The Flavor of Memory
In Hunan, the Spring Festival is always inseparable from food. Not long after I arrived home, the familiar smell began to waft from the kitchen. My mother was busy preparing various New Year delicacies, including cured meats, sausages, glutinous rice cakes, and rice wine. The cured meats of my hometown are the most nostalgic, especially the smoked pork, which has been slowly roasted over charcoal, filling the air with a mouth-watering aroma. A plate of stir-fried smoked pork with green beans is a heavenly delight.
The reunion dinner on New Year's Eve is the centerpiece of our hometown’s celebration. The whole family gathers around the table, and a variety of rich dishes are spread out—fish head with chopped chili, braised pork, sticky rice chicken... Every dish carries the taste of home. What moved me the most was that my mother specially made the glutinous rice cakes I loved as a child. The outside was crispy and golden, while the inside was soft and sweet. One bite and I was flooded with memories.
Customs – The Long-Awaited
Festivity The Spring Festival customs in Hunan are rich and vibrant, full of festive flavor. The tradition of staying up late on New Year's Eve has been maintained in our family. After the reunion dinner, we would sit around the stove and chat. The Spring Festival Gala would be on TV, and outside, the occasional sound of firecrackers would fill the air, creating a joyful and festive atmosphere in the entire village.
On the morning of the first day of the New Year, the sound of firecrackers filled the air, and the scent of gunpowder hung in the atmosphere. Every household would be setting off firecrackers to mark the "opening of the door," symbolizing a prosperous and successful year. Children ran in groups, excitedly playing with their new red envelopes, their faces glowing with innocent smiles. My family and I visited relatives, wishing them a happy new year, and each red envelope carried the most precious blessings.
The temple fair is also a major highlight of the New Year celebrations. On the second day of the New Year, the village held a lively temple fair, with various traditional snacks and folk performances taking place one after another. Dragon and lion dances, flower drum operas, and sticky rice cake making—each performance was infused with strong local flavor. As I stood in the crowd, watching these familiar scenes, I felt like I had been transported back to my carefree childhood New Year days.
Reflections – The Meaning of Home
This time, returning to my hometown in Hunan for the Chinese New Year, I had many reflections. In the past, I always thought that the outside world was more exciting. The skyscrapers, neon lights, and modern lifestyles of the city were captivating. But when I truly returned to my hometown, I realized that the most precious thing is the familiar land, the warmth of family sitting together, the familiar tastes in the New Year's meals, and the simple yet pure festive atmosphere in the village.
My parents are getting older. Wrinkles have appeared on their faces, and their movements are slower than before. My mother is no longer as quick in the kitchen as she used to be, and my father speaks less, but their concern for me has never diminished. They constantly remind me to take care of myself, eat well no matter how busy I am with work. These seemingly ordinary words carry the deepest affection.
This year, the world is still changing, the economic environment is unpredictable, and life is full of challenges. But when I returned home, I felt much more at ease. Because no matter how the outside world changes, home is always there, giving me warmth and strength. The Spring Festival of 2025 made me cherish the time spent with my family even more, and it made me realize that the meaning of home is not just a place to live, but a spiritual haven.
In 2025, I spent the Chinese New Year in my hometown in Hunan, experiencing the rich festive atmosphere and enjoying the warmth of home. In the new year, I wish my family good health, a peaceful life, and that this long-awaited festive atmosphere remains unchanged forever.
