Recently, major chip manufacturers have reported extensive sellouts of their products, a situation that is relatively rare but can occur under specific circumstances. For instance, during the global chip shortage in 2021, the semiconductor industry faced significant supply challenges affecting numerous companies. Currently, the spotlight is on AI chips, particularly Nvidia's Blackwell GPUs, which are sold out for the next 12 months. This high demand underscores the sustained interest in AI technologies.
Nvidia's Blackwell GPUs, launched in March, leverage advanced manufacturing techniques and include features aimed at enhancing AI performance. Major clients, including Amazon, Dell, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, have secured all available units, meaning that new orders may not be fulfilled until late next year. A similar scenario occurred last year with Nvidia’s H100 GPUs, driven by the AI surge initiated by models like ChatGPT.
Moreover, memory chips such as HBM are experiencing soaring demand, with companies like SK Hynix and Micron reporting that their production capacities for 2024 are already fully booked due to increasing needs from AI applications.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) plays a crucial role in this supply chain, capturing a significant share of the advanced chip manufacturing market. Their recent financial results reflect robust growth, particularly in their 3nm and 5nm process technologies.
However, concerns are emerging regarding the potential for another speculative bubble in the AI market. Nvidia's stock has seen an extraordinary rise, prompting questions about the sustainability of such growth. While major tech companies intend to continue investing heavily in AI infrastructure, some analysts caution that a reduction in spending could lead to a market correction.
Despite these concerns, forecasts from various institutions suggest that demand for AI capabilities will remain strong over the next few years, primarily driven by the substantial capital expenditures of leading technology firms.
