Manufacturing companies in the US have invested heavily in automation: the total installation of industrial robots has increased by 12% to 44,303 by 2023. The top adopter is in the automotive industry, followed by the electrical and electronics industries.
Preliminary results for us robot shipments in 2023
"The United States has one of the most advanced manufacturing industries in the world," said Marina Bill, president of the International Federation of Robotics (IFR). " IFR's outlook for preliminary results shows another strong demand for robots in all major areas of manufacturing in the United States in 2023.”
American automobile industry
Sales in the automotive sector rose by 1%, with a record number of 14,678 robots installed in 2023. This follows a 47% jump in installations in 2022 to 14,472 units. By 2023, auto and parts manufacturers will account for 33 percent of all US industrial robots installed. The United States is the second in car and light vehicle production, after China.
Automakers are currently investing in robotics mainly to drive the transformation of electric vehicles and to address labor shortages.
The American Electrical and electronics industry
In 2023, the number of robot installations in the US electrical and electronics industry increased by 37% to 5,120 units. The figure was almost a record level of 5,284 before the outbreak in 2018. The latest results show that the market share of all industrial robots installed in the U. S. manufacturing sector is 12%.
The demand for industrial robots in this area is influenced by trends to strengthen domestic supply chains and drive clean energy transition projects.
Other strong sectors in the US
Other industries with more than 3,000 US installations include metals and machinery (4,123, + 6%), and plastics and chemical products (3,213, + 5%). By 2023, they will account for 9% and 7% of industrial robot installations, respectively.
Of Canada and Mexico
Canada installed 4,616 robots, up 43 percent. The automotive industry accounts for 55% of the country's robot installations. In 2023, auto industry sales grew 99% with 2,549 units installed. This is the highest level ever seen.
The number of robots installed in Mexico's manufacturing sector has remained almost unchanged, standing at 5,868 by 2023. The country's main adopter is the automotive industry, accounting for 69% of robot installations in 2023: 4,068 units (-0%) units were sold in 2023, the third-best result since a peak of 4,805 units in 2017.
